Whether it is for a routine procedure such as a spay or neuter, or for a difficult medical problem such as cancer, or an intestinal obstruction, surgery can be a very stressful situation for both the owner and the pet.
At Central Brooklyn Veterinary Center, we do everything possible to make certain that your pet is as comfortable and relaxed as possible before, during and after the surgery, and that the recovery period is quick and uneventful. Your pet’s health, well-being and recovery are always our first concern.
In preparation for anesthesia and surgery, blood and frequently urine samples are checked for any abnormalities to insure the safety of the procedure, and allow us to evaluate your pet as fully as possible prior to the procedure.
All surgeries are given pre-operative pain medication to help him or her relax and to alleviate any potential stress or pain. We used the safest and most modern anesthesia and is very similar to that used for people (although we don’t ask them to count backwards from 100!) :)
An intravenous catheter will be placed prior to surgery, and intravenous fluids will be given throughout the procedure. This will keep the animal hydrated and allow for easy access to a vein if needed.
During the procedure the animal will be monitored with special equipment that will give us an instantaneous reading of the amount of oxygen in the blood, the heart rate, an electrocardiogram, and the animal’s blood pressure. In addition, body temperature is maintained by circulating warm water beds both during the procedure and the recovery period.
After surgery, your pet will be taken to the recovery area will it will be closely monitored until fully awake. Additional pain medication is then given so the animal does not feel any pain during the wakeup period. A supply is sent home to insure further comfort.
Animals undergoing most routine procedures are usually sent home the same day, due to the quick recovery from our modern anesthetic protocols, and our commitment to pain elimination. Some more complicated procedures may require further hospitalization in our intensive care area.
Rest assured that we believe the animal recovers best at home, surrounded by its loving family and every attempt is made to get the animal home as quickly and safely as possible.
